Enrolling Now For Grades Pre-K-12

An interview is required for all families who wish to enroll child(ren) at the Academy. At the time of enrollment, the Academy must receive all necessary paperwork, including: the required application, release forms, and health records. Transfer students must have signed record release forms to deliver to their sending school. The resource fee must also be paid at the time of enrollment. Placement testing is required in math and reading at the discretion of the Director.

Academics

Traditional Christian values and character building using ABeka Curriculum supplemented with other Christian materials.

Curriculum

In order to meet our goals for excellence, North Stonington Christian Academy primarily utilizes the ABeka Curriculum, complemented with materials from other Christian publishers including Association of Christian Schools Intl., to provide a balanced and integrated approach to education. The curriculum includes the following subjects: Bible, Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, History and Geography, Spanish, French, Latin, Art, Music, Physical Education, Health, Speech and Drama, Home Economics, Community Service, and Technology. Stanford Achievement Tests are given to all students annually, and OlSat testing is done every other year to monitor our student’s academic progress. The staff at NSCA assists students to develop to their full potential in every area, through the power of God working in and with each student as they put forth their best effort.

Pre-K

NSCA provides a state licensed Pre-K program for three and four year olds whose parents desire a safe, nurturing Christian learning environment for their child. Our Pre-K program is a period of transition from the home to school life. Early childhood learning is foundation learning that is basic to other elementary education.

Elementary

Each child is created as one who is unique in his/her abilities, characteristics, and talents. Our K–4 students are taught reading, phonics, spelling, writing, math, science, social studies, Bible, music, physical education, health, art, Spanish and technology.

Middle School

Our programs and classrooms are orderly, creative, secure, loving and flexible to meet the needs of each child. English Language Arts science, pre-algebra or algebra, Bible, physical education, health, Spanish, art, and music.

High School

Art, Music, Chorus, Home Economics, Speech, Library, Media, Graphic Design, Yearbook/Photography, Community Service (May change from year to year)

Attendance

At North Stonington Christian Academy, regular attendance of all students is expected. Regularity and punctuality are important in the student’s character development. As an educational institution, NSCA exercises certain procedures in order to standardize and insure quality education for all students.

Excessive absences or tardiness, whether excused or unexcused, have a negative effect on a child’s school learning accomplishment. Total absences for a school year should not exceed 32 days. Absences in excess of this number may require the repeating of a grade.

Excused Absences:

An absence which has been arranged with the child’s teacher(s) prior to the absence will be considered excused. A parent must inform the teacher of their child’s intent to be absent (date, length of time, reason). This information should come to the teacher at least two days before the absence is to take place. Parents can either call or write the information. Upon the student’s return to school, a note should also be included explaining the absence. Parents should call the office to arrange with the teacher(s) how missed work is to be made up. Absences due to the following circumstances are also excused:

a) Personal illness with or without a doctor’s excuse, but only with a written excuse from home
b) Death in the immediate family
c) Doctor/Dental appointments (please make an effort to schedule these appointments, if at all possible, during times other than school hours).

Unexcused Absences:

An absence will be considered unexcused if it is for a reason other than those accepted and prior provision for such has not been made. Students are required to make up all work that is missed due to an unexcused absence. Repeated unexcused absence is considered truancy, and will be addressed as such.

Tardiness:

Classes begin promptly at 8:30 AM. Tardiness affects the entire class and should be kept to a minimum. The Academy realizes that there are occasional accidents, emergencies and inclement weather that make travel to school slower. Notes indicating that these were the cause of the tardiness will result in its being excused. If a student arrives at school after 8:30 AM, he or she should report directly to the main office for a late pass that should then be presented to the classroom teacher.

Before and After School Care

NSCA offers a state-licensed Before and After Care program. Before Care is available from 7:30-8:30 AM, and After-Care is available from 3:00-5:00 PM. Only students from paying families officially enrolled in the Before and After Care programs may be included. The fee in addition to regular monthly tuition is $6 per hour. Parents must submit appropriate paperwork to enroll their students in this program (see Before and After Care Enrollment Application form under Enrollment section). Students remain in a designated classroom with designated staff–no unsupervised wandering will be allowed regardless of the student’s age. Students must provide their own snacks. Parents are required to be prompt in pick-up time. Please notify Mrs. Wilkinson or the school office to make arrangements for this service for your family. Children enrolled in after care may change clothes after school. They may do homework during this time as well as being involved in recreation or sports.

Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF)

Regular PTF meetings are held monthly. These meetings are for parents, teachers, and friends of the Academy, and are an opportunity to keep current on all that is going on at the school. Meetings will generally be held after school from 3:00-3:45 on the second Tuesday of each month from October through May. Occasionally a meeting might be scheduled for the evening to provide for those who cannot attend in the afternoon. Advance notice will be given.

The purpose of our Parent Teacher Fellowship is:

To aquaint both parent and teacher with the philosophy of Christian Education.
To aquaint both parent and teacher with the importance of recognizing and adequately coping with the emotional, spiritual, and disciplinary needs of the child.
To provide an opportunity for parent and teacher to know and fellowship with one another.
To enhance the school’s ministry.
To provide special project nights and programs for the children.
To plan PTF events and fundraisers.
